110 years ago, Agner KrarupErlang published the first paper in queueing theory, motivated by telephone calls at aswitchboard. However, the classical queueing models were no longer valid models for many types oftraffics on the Internet, which rejuvenated queueing theory since 1970s. For the past 15 years, newchallenges have emerged, largely from availability and applications of big data. I will illustrateour efforts in a few directions to address modeling, performance, inferences, optimization forlarge-scaled, multi-dimensional queueing systems with complex dependence structures, unknowncomponents, missing data, delayed information.
